When your client says, “I never want to leave my home,” what do you say?

There are good options for extending and enhancing independence at home, the key is to make those decisions early enough to take advantage of everything the option offers. 

In-home care can make it possible for a person to stay in their independent living situation for a much longer period of time.  It can cost less to add a low to moderate level of care to home, or independent community living than it does to move to a higher level of residential care.  In-home care services such as light housekeeping, medication reminders, and meal preparation can make staying home a reasonable proposition.

Sometimes in-home care is the permanent solution that carries an elder through to the end of life, at home.  But more often in-home care is a transitional tool, helping ease the elder into higher levels of care in a facility or community setting.
